Ownership data tells you who owns a company and how insiders are trading it. On Vantafin, the Insider Transactions tab shows Form 3, 4, and 5 filings for a stock, and ownership data shows the institutions holding it. You find these on a company profile. This guide explains what the data means and how to use it.

Insider transactions (Form 3/4/5)

Company insiders - officers, directors, and large shareholders - must report their trades to the SEC:

FormMeaning
Form 3Initial statement of ownership
Form 4A change in ownership (a buy or sell)
Form 5Annual statement / deferred transactions

Open the Insider Transactions tab at /app/{TICKER}/insider-transactions (equities only) to review recent insider buys and sells. Clusters of insider buying or selling can be a useful signal to investigate further, though they are never conclusive on their own.

Form 4 activity

Review Apple insider transactions

Open AAPL Insider Transactions and scan recent Form 4 buys and sells before you treat any cluster as a signal.

Institutional ownership

Institutional ownership shows the funds and firms that hold a stock. It helps you gauge:

  • How widely held a company is.
  • Whether large holders are concentrated or diversified.

For ETFs and funds, profiles instead surface the fund's holdings - the securities the fund owns.

Peer ownership

Compare NVIDIA and AMD insider flow

Check both Insider Transactions tabs for clusters of buying or selling, then cross-check recent filings for context.

How to use ownership data in research

Combine ownership signals with the rest of the profile:

  1. Check recent insider transactions for notable buying or selling.
  2. Cross-reference against the latest SEC filings and earnings transcript for context.
  3. Ask AI Chat to summarize recent insider activity by attaching the ticker.
